While all the world was with breathless attention listening to the revelations of the new restorers of guitar rock, headlined by Interpol, The Killers and The Strokes, this trio of tall guys from East Sussex was bit by bit mastering the potentials of synthesizers in order to destroy once and for all the unbreakable bond between electric guitars and rock’n’roll. Such a bold step was caused by the fact that Keane’s only guitarist had left the band disheartened by the lack of money and endless disappointments. Soon afterwards, they met French producer James Sanger, who has worked with artists like Dido, U2 and Brian Eno, which only cemented the band’s faith that their music choice was right. Sanger was the first to see the great potential in the unknown British guys, and he invited the band to a professional studio to record what they had accumulated during the years of hanging out in the empty pubs.
That’s how Tim Rice-Oxley’s keyboard ornaments and Tom Chaplin’s incredibly strong vocals, often compared to Bono’s, have become Keane’s trademark.
